About Me

Gary Spencer is a Minneapolis-based photographer whose work spans decades across commercial, editorial, and fine art photography. Known for his precision, lighting expertise, and strong visual composition, his career reflects both technical mastery and artistic evolution.

Spencer began his career in fashion and advertising photography, creating imagery for major national clients including Target Corporation, TIME Magazine, and GE Capital. This early work established his reputation for clean, controlled lighting and compelling visual storytelling.

His work later expanded into the international ballroom dance world, where he became a leading photographer capturing the energy, elegance, and motion of competitive dance. His acclaimed book, Championship Ballroom Dancing, is a striking black-and-white exploration of movement and form. He also co-founded the International Dance Directory, an early global resource for the dance industry that later evolved into DanceDirectory.com.

Today, Spencer’s work has shifted toward a more personal and refined artistic direction.

Through his ongoing series, Structural Silence, he explores abstract architectural photography in black and white—focusing on structure, light, geometry, and negative space. These images distill complex environments into quiet, powerful compositions that emphasize clarity, balance, and visual presence.
